Top 4 eVTOL Companies in South Florida to Watch

Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, often described as “air taxis” or flying cars, are rapidly moving from concept to commercialization. South Florida is emerging as an early hub for this next generation of transportation, with a mix of local aerospace startups and global companies planning operations across the region.

The distance between major South Florida cities is ideal for electric air taxis, with Miami to Fort Lauderdale at roughly 25 miles, Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton about 20 miles, and Boca Raton to West Palm Beach around 30 miles. Most eVTOL aircraft are optimized for short regional flights between 20 and 100 miles, making these routes well suited to current aircraft capabilities and the corridor an ideal testing ground.

Here are some four of the top eVTOL companies connected to South Florida’s growing advanced air mobility ecosystem.

Doroni Aerospace

Based in Pompano Beach (Broward County), Doroni Aerospace, was founded in 2017 by Doron Merdinger. The company is one of the few eVTOL manufacturers fully headquartered in Florida.

Doroni focuses on personal aircraft rather than shared air taxis. The company is developing the Doroni H1, a two-seat personal eVTOL designed for urban and suburban flight. Doroni received FAA special airworthiness certification for its prototype in 2023, allowing flight testing to continue. Targeted commercial deliveries are expected in 2028.

“In sixty-six years, humanity went from discovering flight to traveling 238,000 miles into space. But in the 80s something changed. America’s innovators stopped building machines and started building software,” shared Doron Merdinger. He continued, “But now, we’re entering a new era where the most advanced hardware meets the most advanced software.”

UrbanLink Air Mobility

Headquartered in Coral Gables (Miami-Dade County), UrbanLink Air Mobility plans to operate one of the first U.S. eVTOL airline networks. UrbanLink was founded in 2024 by Ed Wegel, an aviation executive with decades of experience in airline financing, operations, and aircraft certification.

UrbanLink Air Mobility is developing a carbon-free, integrated air, sea and ground travel network designed to connect people across regional distances of up to 1,000 miles using all-electric vehicles. The company plans to launch a regional air taxi service linking Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. The company is developing vertiports in partnership with local developers to create a network of takeoff and landing hubs.

Formed to provide zero-emission air and sea mobility in Florida and the Caribbean, UrbanLink ordered 20 Lilium Jets in 2024, has current commitments to lease BETA Technologies Alia e-CTOL and e-VTOL aircraft, as well as Regent Seagliders, with first deliveries and service expected in the second half of 2027.

LuftCar

Based in Orlando (Central Florida), LuftCar may not be based in South Florida, but has established connections to the region. The company was founded in 2021 by Santh Sathya, a visionary entrepreneur in sustainable transportation who has led LuftCar from concept to prototype demonstrations and global project planning.

The company is developing a compact eVTOL for personal and urban air taxi use that can carry two to four passengers and uses hybrid electric propulsion. The company’s innovations include patented air‑to‑ground integration technology and AI‑driven planning tools for infrastructure such as vertiports, designed to support hydrogen refueling, sustainable aviation fuel, electric charging, and smart energy distribution.

Just last month, LuftCar announced the successful demonstration of its patented air‑ground docking system in West Palm Beach, Florida. This is a major engineering milestone for the company’s modular air/ground vehicles, indicating active development and testing on the east coast of Florida.

“This milestone moves LuftCar from concept to reality. Our docking system is the heart of a new mobility paradigm, one that eliminates the boundaries between air and ground transport,” shared Santh Sathya in a press release. “Today’s success validates years of engineering and brings us one step closer to transforming how people, cargo, and emergency services move.”

Archer Aviation

Headquartered on the west coast in California, Archer Aviation is expanding its electric air taxi network to the east coast into South Florida with proposed networks across the region from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach. The company was founded in 2018 by co‑founders Adam Goldstein and Brett Adcock, both of whom have ties to Florida.

The company designs and develops eVTOL aircraft intended for urban air mobility that can fly short routes quickly, quietly, and with low emissions. Its best‑known aircraft is “Midnight,” an eVTOL designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers for short regional flights. Trips that can take up to 90 minutes by car could take 10 to 20 minutes by air taxi.

Archer Aviation aims to provide efficient connections between the region’s three international airports and has secured commercial interest including United Airlines who gave a large deposit for 100 electric air taxis. The company is also partnering with developers to integrate vertiports into key locations such as stadiums and downtown areas such as Hard Rock Stadium and Apogee Golf Club who are preparing their existing helipads for eVTOL operations to serve as air taxi stops.

Why South Florida Is a Hotspot

South Florida’s geography, population density, and investment interest make it ideal for early eVTOL deployment. The region offers short distances between major cities with an average  of 20 - 30 miles between  Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca and West Palm Beach.

Additionally, heavy traffic congestion makes air taxis a time-saving option, real estate developers are supporting vertiport integration into projects, and existing aviation infrastructure reduces deployment barriers.

South Florida’s eVTOL ecosystem includes not only aircraft manufacturers and operators but also infrastructure developers building vertiports and testing new transportation models. With startups, global aerospace companies, and infrastructure partners working together, the region is increasingly viewed as one of the most promising launch markets for advanced air mobility in the United States.

With Doroni Aerospace, UrbanLink, LuftCar, and Archer Aviation, South Florida is positioning itself as one of the first operational advanced air mobility corridors in the U.S.
